The English Grammar Profile of learner competence

Abstract English Profile (EP) is an ongoing empirical exploration of learner initiated by Cambridge University Press and English, among others. EP aims to create a set empirically-based descriptions language competencies for English. ‘Reference Level Descriptors’ already exist as part the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) but are intuitively derived not designed one specific language. The Grammar (EGP, www.englishprofile.org/english-grammar-profile ) sub-project which profile competence in grammar. This paper details rationale study methodology that was developed investigate Learner Corpus arrive at over 1,200 grammatical statements. Key findings link existing corpus-based second acquisition work also presented.
